A North Wales Housing (NWH) extracare scheme, built by K&C Construction, has taken first place at the regional rounds of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards.

The LABC awards, held this year at the De Vere Village Hotel in St Davids Park, Deeside, aim to celebrate excellence achieved through building standards, technical innovation and sustainable designs. K&C Construction was presented with the Best Social/Affordable Housing Development accolade for its work at Llys y Coed in Llanfairfechan and the company will now move forward to compete in the all-Wales final.

Set in a picturesque wooded area, Llys y Coed is a mixed refurbishment and new build scheme comprising 46 self contained one and two bedroom apartments. The existing building (a former nursing home) has enjoyed a major renovation and overhaul, bringing it in line with the new structure, which are now linked via a glass walkway. The apartments are accessed through a series of corridors designed to emulate a typical street setting, encouraging resident interaction and visiting, whilst retaining privacy when needed.

The development is one of the first extracare schemes to be launched in the area and offers residents independent living supported with care, tailored to meet their specific needs. The private apartments are set within with a wider secure facility that includes a range of communal areas such as a restaurant, lounges, art and craft facility, IT and DVD room, hair and beauty salon, courtyard and garden areas.

A joint development between North Wales Housing and Conwy County Council, K&C Construction managed the construction of the entire development, meeting all targets and handing over the new facility earlier this year.

Chris White of K&C Construction added: “This award is a fantastic accolade for us and it’s great to see the efforts of the entire construction team celebrated in this way. Llys y Coed is a first class facility and we look forward to moving forward to the next stage and into the all-Wales final of the LABC Building Excellence awards.”

Paul Diggory of North Wales Housing said: “This has been a really interesting and exciting scheme for us. Llys y Coed is our first extracare development and we are delighted to have created a scheme that fuses modern design with relaxed, comfortable and secure living. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our construction partners at this scheme, K&C Construction, for their highly deserved win.”
