K&C Construction represented Wales in the Best Affordable or Social Housing category at the Local Authority Building Control National Awards 2009 for a housing development it has built in Eithinog, Bangor for Tai Eryri Housing Association.
In a further coup, the scheme was also a finalist in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2009 after being nominated for the Sustainable Smaller Social Housing Project of the Year. Both ceremonies were held in London last week with Managing Director, Chris White collecting the LABC Award at the Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square London.
“The development is the first Code 4 sustainability-rated social housing project in Wales”, he said. “We have worked very hard to deliver a scheme that sets the benchmark for sustainability so it’s fantastic that our dedication has been recognised as an exemplar of good practice.”
The Eithinog housing project has already picked up two Local Authority Building Control awards for Gwynedd and North Wales earlier in the summer. Having been one of 30 outstanding construction projects, within 10 different categories, the scheme was selected from a staggering 6,000 developments inspected by building control teams from Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd and Wrexham over the previous year.
Introduced in 2007, the Code for Sustainable Homes is a national standard for new homes. It measures new homes against nine sustainable design and construction categories, grading the home as a whole. Sustainable features incorporated into the development at Eithinog, which was built on behalf of Cymdeithas Tai Eryris, include photovoltaic solar panels, rain-water harvesting tanks, under-floor heating and insulation that is a 45% improvement on Building Regulation requirements.
“As a company we’re committed to the value of sustainable development”, concluded Chris. “Not only from an environmental perspective, but also because it has a positive impact on the lives of individuals as well as society as a whole.”
